Project overview

General Demolition was appointed to deliver an extensive programme of demolition, strip-out and enabling works at 21 Bloomsbury Street, an 85,000 sq ft, 19th-century office building close to the British Museum. The works formed part of a major refurbishment and extension designed to transform the existing property into a highly sustainable modern office building. The project was delivered in three distinct phases to align with Camden Council planning consents, with General Demolition working across all seven storeys and at roof level. The scope included the isolation and decommissioning of M&E services and temporary supplies, geotechnical and superstructure investigations, a full internal strip-out, slab infills and opening-up works across six floors, removal of multiple lifts, installation of perimeter scaffolding and a hoist, removal of roof plant and substantial internal demolition. The works also included demolition of the existing roof and glazed atrium, preparing the structure for the subsequent refurbishment and two-storey extension. The project placed a strong emphasis on retaining and upgrading the existing building rather than replacing it, supporting the wider development's ambitious sustainability objectives.
